Most moving days go sideways around 2pm — the truck's half full, everyone's hungry, and the 101 is backing up. After a lot of deliveries across Ventura County, here's the schedule we see work best for a 2–3 bedroom local move.
The night before
- Pack an open-first tote for each person: chargers, meds, toiletries, a change of clothes, sheets.
- Stage everything packed in the garage or living room, heaviest totes closest to the door.
- Confirm the truck, helpers, and parking. Charge your phone.
6:00–7:00am — Coffee and a walkthrough
Eat a real breakfast. Walk every room with your helpers so they know what goes and what stays. Tape a "do not load" sign on anything staying behind.
7:00–11:00am — Load the heavy stuff
This is your coolest, freshest window — especially inland in Simi Valley, Moorpark, or Thousand Oaks where afternoons get hot. Load furniture and appliances first, then totes. Snap-lid totes stack evenly like bricks, so build tight walls floor to ceiling. Keep each one at or under 65 lbs and use the dolly. More in our furniture protection guide.
11:00am–12:00pm — Last sweep and lunch
Check closets, cabinets, the attic, and the side yard. Grab lunch before driving — hungry people make bad decisions on stairs.
12:00–1:00pm — Drive
Midday beats rush hour on the 101 and 118. Send the open-first totes in your own car, not the truck.
1:00–5:00pm — Unload room by room
Put someone at the new front door directing traffic by label. If you used a color labeling system, totes go straight to the right room without questions. Beds and bathroom first, kitchen second.
5:00pm on — Make the beds, order dinner
Don't try to unpack everything tonight. Beds made, shower curtain up, coffee maker plugged in — that's a win. The rest can wait, which is why you want a pickup date that uses your full rental window (7 days for a 2–3 bedroom).
