Color per room, number per tote
Pick a roll of colored painter's tape for each room and stick a strip on two sides and the lid of every tote. Then write a number on it. That's the whole system.
- Blue: kitchen
- Yellow: primary bedroom
- Green: kids' rooms
- Red: living room
- Orange: garage and outdoor
Tape a matching color strip on the doorframe of each room at the new place. Whoever carries the tote doesn't need to ask you a single question.
Keep a one-page contents list
Numbers only work if the numbers mean something. Keep a note on your phone: "Blue 4 — pots, baking sheets, mixer." Thirty seconds per tote, and you'll never have to open six lids looking for one thing. A photo of the open tote before you snap the lid works just as well if typing isn't your thing.
Mark priority, not just room
Add a big star or "OPEN FIRST" on the handful of totes that get you through night one: bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, a pot and a pan, coffee, pet bowls, medications. Load those last so they come off the truck first. Our moving checklist covers what belongs in that first round.
Things worth writing on the tape
- FRAGILE — and keep these totes under the 65 lb cap with room for padding.
- HEAVY — books and tools; a heads-up saves somebody's back.
- GARAGE — STAY PACKED — things you won't touch for a month. Don't haul them inside.
Why totes make this easier than cardboard
Tape sticks and peels cleanly off plastic, so you're not writing on a surface you'll have to break down later. Every tote is the same size, so "Blue 4" is genuinely interchangeable with "Blue 5" when you're stacking a truck.
