Ventura County

The Ventura County Moving Checklist

Every task you need to check off between deciding to move and unpacking your last tote — organized by week, tailored for movers in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, Simi Valley, and everywhere in between.

Step 1 for a smoother move: reserve your 805 Totes package now. Free delivery and pickup across the 805, dolly included, zero cardboard.

8 weeks before your move

  • Set your target move date and confirm it with your landlord, buyer, or closing agent.
  • Create a moving binder or notes doc to track quotes, receipts, and confirmations.
  • Start decluttering room by room — donate, sell, or toss what you won't unpack in the new place.
  • Research moving companies in Ventura County and request 2–3 quotes if you're hiring movers.
  • Reserve your 805 Totes package to lock in founding-customer pricing and your delivery window.

4 weeks before

  • Submit a USPS change-of-address at usps.com/move (takes 5 minutes).
  • Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance, DMV, and any subscriptions.
  • Schedule utility shutoff at your old place and start-up at the new one — SoCal Edison, SoCal Gas, Spectrum/Frontier, and your local water district (Ventura Water, Camrosa, Calleguas, etc.).
  • Book your 805 Totes delivery date and confirm dolly quantity for your package size.
  • Notify your kids' school and arrange records transfer if you're changing districts.

2 weeks before

  • Confirm your movers (or friends) and the delivery window for your totes.
  • Refill prescriptions and forward medical records if you're changing providers.
  • Use up what's in the freezer and pantry — one less thing to move.
  • Book cleaners for your old place, or block a Saturday to clean it yourself.
  • Take photos of electronics setups before unplugging so reassembly is painless.

1 week before — packing week

  • 805 Totes arrive at your door with a dolly, zip ties, and labels. Start packing room by room.
  • Label every tote with the destination room and a 1-line summary of contents.
  • Pack a first-night bag: sheets, toiletries, chargers, coffee, meds, a change of clothes.
  • Set aside valuables (passports, jewelry, hard drives) to move in your own car.
  • Confirm parking or elevator reservations at both addresses.

Moving day

  • Do a final walkthrough of the old place — every cabinet, closet, garage shelf, and the fridge.
  • Load totes onto the dolly and roll them straight into the truck. Stack up to 4 high — they interlock.
  • Take meter readings and photos of the empty rooms for your deposit.
  • Drop keys with your landlord or leave them where you agreed.
  • Unload totes directly into their labeled rooms at the new place.

First week in your new home

  • Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first — everything else can wait.
  • Test smoke detectors and replace batteries. Locate the main water shutoff and electrical panel.
  • Change the locks or rekey (Ventura County locksmiths typically charge $80–150).
  • Meet your neighbors — they'll tell you which trash day is which.
  • Stack empty totes by the door. 805 Totes picks them up on your scheduled date — no cleaning required.
