Ventura County only gets a handful of genuinely wet weeks a year, and somehow they always seem to land on somebody's escrow date. A rainy move is completely manageable — as long as you plan for it instead of hoping the forecast is wrong.
Check the forecast Thursday, not Saturday
Coastal Ventura and Oxnard can be drizzling while Simi Valley stays dry, so look at the specific address, not the county. If rain is likely, you're not canceling — you're just reordering the day. Load fragile and soft goods during the driest window and save the garage and patio stuff for the drizzle.
Protect the floors before you protect anything else
- Old towels or a runner at every doorway, both houses.
- Flattened cardboard down the main hallway if you have hardwood.
- A dedicated pair of shoes for the outdoor crew, and a shoes-off rule for anyone working inside.
- A roll of paper towels by the door to wipe tote bottoms as they come in.
Wet driveways are the real hazard
Sloped driveways around Thousand Oaks and Ventura's hillside streets get slick fast. Walk, don't rush, and use the dolly that comes with every rental instead of carrying a stack you can't see over. Keep each tote at or under 65 lbs — your grip is worse when your hands are wet.
This is where plastic totes genuinely win
Cardboard in the rain is a losing battle. The bottoms go soft, tape peels, and a box that got rained on once will fail two hours later with your dishes inside. Our totes have snap-shut lids and solid plastic walls — set them in a puddle and the contents don't care. Wipe them off and keep going. Same reason they beat cardboard in a damp garage.
Stage under cover
Pick one covered spot at each house — garage, carport, porch overhang — and make it the only staging area. Totes queue there, the truck backs up as close as it can, and nothing sits in the open getting rained on. Tell us when you book and we'll drop your delivery under cover instead of at the curb.
Give yourself an extra day
Rain slows everything by a couple of hours. If your rental window is tight, extend it — $20/day for the first three days, then $12/day, up to 10 extra days — and the pickup date moves with it automatically. Better than rushing a load down a wet ramp.
