Nine times out of ten, the room that wrecks a Ventura County moving day isn't the kitchen — it's the garage. We deliver totes all over the 805, and the garage is where we hear the same sentence: "We thought that would take an hour." Beach chairs, half-used paint, a decade of holiday bins, tools that live in three different drawers. Here's how to get ahead of it.
Start the garage first, not last
Most people pack the garage the night before because it "isn't really rooms." Flip that. The garage holds the heaviest, dirtiest, most awkward items in the house, and it's the only room where you'll actually have to make decisions about throwing things away. Give it two weekends, not two hours.
- Weekend one: sort and purge. Nothing gets packed.
- Weekend two: pack into totes, label, and stage along one wall.
The four-pile sort
Pull everything out onto the driveway on a cool morning — around here that means before 10am — and build four piles:
- Keep: goes in a tote.
- Donate: Goodwill and the Salvation Army in Oxnard and Ventura both take tools, sporting goods, and small appliances.
- Hazardous: paint, solvents, motor oil, propane, pool chemicals, car batteries. These do not go on the truck.
- Trash: the dried-out paint rollers and the 2014 pool noodle. Be honest.
Ventura County runs free household hazardous waste drop-off for residents — take the paint and chemicals there rather than hiding them in a box. Movers will refuse them, and rightly so.
Pack heavy things in small loads
This is where totes beat cardboard by a mile. A garage box packed with hand tools will blow the bottom out of a cardboard carton halfway down the driveway. Our totes hold 65 lbs and have a rigid base and handles, so you can load a tote with wrenches and actually carry it.
- Tools: one tote, packed dense and low. Don't fill it to the lid — you'll never lift it.
- Cords, chargers, extension cords: coil and zip-tie, then one tote for all of it. Loose cords become a knot you'll cut apart later.
- Screws, nails, bits: keep them in their original organizers, tape the lids shut, and set them upright in a tote.
- Sports and beach gear: bulky but light — this is where totes fill up fast, so plan two or three.
- Holiday bins: if it's already in a plastic bin, leave it. Don't repack what's already packed.
Don't try to pack these
Some garage items travel better loose, strapped in the truck: ladders, bikes, wheelbarrows, folded patio furniture, long-handled yard tools. Bundle the yard tools with a bungee and load them as one unit. For anything with a finish you care about — the workbench top, a tool chest, the beer fridge — grab a set of moving blankets and a dolly instead of trying to box it.
The fridge or freezer in the garage needs its own plan: unplug and defrost it 24 hours ahead, prop the door, and move it upright on an appliance dolly. We rent those as an add-on when you book.
Label by where it's going, not what's inside
"GARAGE — SHELF LEFT" beats "tools" every time. When totes come off the truck, whoever's carrying doesn't care what's inside; they care which wall to set it against. Write the destination room first, contents second.
How many totes does a garage take?
A typical two-car Ventura County garage runs 8 to 15 totes once the loose stuff is packed — more if it doubles as storage for a family of four. That's usually the difference between sizing down to a smaller package and being comfortable. The local angle
Garages in Camarillo and Thousand Oaks tend to be storage-first — holiday bins, camping gear, the second fridge. Closer to the coast in Ventura and Oxnard, we see more boards, bikes, and salt-air rust, which means more "toss it" decisions and fewer totes. Either way, we drop the totes and dollies at your door and pick them up when you're done — no store run, no flattening cardboard at the end of a long week.
