First hour: lock the logistics
Before you touch a single drawer, nail down four things: the truck or movers, the elevator or parking, help for move day, and your boxes. Everything else can be improvised. Nothing can be improvised at 7am on move day.
On boxes: this is where renting beats a store run. No assembling, no taping, no hunting for the right size. Day one: everything that isn't daily life
Work top to bottom, room by room, and don't sort. Sorting is a luxury for people with three weeks.
- Closets and dressers: fold clothes straight into totes. Hanging clothes stay on hangers, bundled in a trash bag with the hooks poking out the top.
- Garage and storage: heaviest items in the bottom half of each tote. Cap around 65 lbs per tote so it's still liftable.
- Books, decor, linens: books in small counts mixed with soft goods so no tote becomes a brick.
- Anything hazardous: paint, propane, pool chemicals — those don't go on a truck. Set them aside now; our garage guide covers local disposal.
Label with two words on the lid: room and priority. "Kitchen — NOW" or "Garage — LATER." That's the whole labeling system you have time for.
Day two: kitchen, bathroom, and the essentials tote
Kitchens eat hours. Wrap plates in towels and stand them on edge rather than stacking flat. Glassware goes upright with dish cloths jammed between. Toss the pantry odds and ends instead of moving three half-bags of rice. Full method in our kitchen packing guide.
Then pack one essentials tote and put it in your car, not the truck: chargers, meds, toiletries, a change of clothes for everyone, bedding, coffee setup, toilet paper, and a box cutter. If nothing else gets unpacked for a week, that tote gets you through it.
What to deliberately skip
- Deep cleaning as you go. One pass at the end.
- Decluttering. Move it now, donate it from the new garage later.
- Perfect protection for cheap stuff. Protect what's fragile or sentimental; the IKEA lamp takes its chances.
- Cardboard cleanup. With rented totes there isn't any — we come get them.

The fast part is getting out. The slow part is getting settled, and after 48 hours of packing you will not want to unpack on a deadline. Studio and 1-bedroom rentals run 5 days, 2-bedroom gets a full week, 3-bedroom 7 days, and 4-bedroom 10 days. Extend by the day if you need it — $20/day for the first three days, then $12/day, up to 10 extra days — and your pickup date shifts automatically.
