Some of our favorite deliveries are to families helping a parent leave a house they've been in for thirty or forty years. It's a different kind of move — less about speed, more about decisions. Here's what we've watched work across Ventura County.
Measure the new place first
Everything gets easier once you know what actually fits. Get the floor plan or tape-measure the new rooms, then decide furniture before you sort a single drawer. If the dining set doesn't fit, you've just answered a hundred smaller questions about china, linens, and leaves.
A room order that doesn't wear you out
Start where the memories are thinnest and work inward. Momentum matters more than speed.
- Garage, laundry, spare closets first. Easy calls, fast visible progress.
- Kitchen next. Duplicates are obvious — nobody needs four spatulas in a smaller place.
- Bedrooms and living room after that.
- Photos, letters, and keepsakes last. These stop the clock every time. Box them to sort later, at the new place, in a chair, with coffee.
Two to three hours a day is a real limit for most people. Plan around it instead of against it.
Four piles, not two
Keep, give to family, donate or sell, and toss. The "give to family" pile is the one that stalls moves — set a date by which relatives must pick items up, or it becomes a keep pile by default. Why totes are easier on everybody
No assembling, no taping, no scavenging boxes from behind a grocery store. They stack evenly, they don't collapse when you're carrying them with one hand on a railing, and a dolly comes with every rental so nothing has to be carried far. Each holds up to 65 lbs — we tell downsizing families to aim well under that and use more totes instead.
Keep a "first night" tote per person: meds, glasses, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, and bedding. If everything else waits a week, that's fine.
Take the time you need
Rentals run 5 days for studio and 1-bedroom, a full week for 2-bedroom, 7 days for 3-bedroom, and 10 days for 4-bedroom. Downsizing usually means unpacking slower than you packed, so extend by the day if you want — $20/day for the first three days, then $12/day, up to 10 extra days. There's no rush from our end and no cardboard pile waiting at the curb.
