Most people move a handful of times in their whole life, so nobody has a gut feel for container counts. This is the worksheet we walk neighbors through over the phone — four steps, about twenty minutes, and you'll know your number before you book.
Step 1: List every space, including the ones you'd skip
Walk the house and write down every defined space: each bedroom, kitchen, dining, living room, bathrooms, laundry, office, hall closets, pantry, and garage. Closets and the garage are where the volume hides — they're the two most commonly forgotten spaces and the two that blow up estimates on move day.
Step 2: Assign a starting number per room
Use these as your baseline, then adjust for how packed the space actually is:
- Bedroom: start at 4 totes, add 2–4 for a walk-in closet
- Kitchen: start at 6 totes (dishes, glassware, cookware, appliances, pantry, overflow)
- Living/dining: start at 3–4 totes
- Bathroom: 1 tote each
- Laundry and hall closets: 2–3 totes
- Garage: 8–15 totes if it's an active storage space
Step 3: Add seasonal and specialty items
Holiday decorations, camping gear, sports equipment, tools, craft supplies. A Christmas tree and its trimmings alone will take a full tote. Add 2–4 totes here for most homes.
Step 4: Add a 15% buffer
Whatever you total, add 15%. If you land on 35, plan for 40. You will always find one more shelf of things you forgot about.
Worked example, two-bedroom home: primary bedroom 5 + second bedroom 4 + kitchen 6 + living/dining 4 + bathrooms and laundry 2 + hall closets 3 + seasonal 3 = 27, plus a 15% buffer = 31 totes. That's comfortably inside our 2-Bedroom package ($179, ~40 totes).

Where the totes actually go: kitchen, bedroom, living
Kitchen is the heaviest and most underestimated room. One tote for everyday dishes, one for glassware and mugs, one for pots and pans, one for small appliances, one for pantry, and one for the junk-drawer miscellany. Wrap fragile pieces in your own dish towels instead of buying bubble wrap — you're moving the towels anyway.
Bedrooms split into clothing, bedding, and small personal items. Hanging clothes go in on the hanger, laid flat. Bedding compresses into one tote per bed and doubles as padding. A guest room might be two totes; an occupied kid's room is closer to five.
Living room: books are the trap. Our totes are rated to 65 lbs, and a tote filled edge to edge with hardcovers gets there fast. Fill the bottom third with books and top it with pillows or throws so someone can actually lift it.
Why the dolly changes your day
Every rental includes at least one dolly. Stack four to six totes and roll them out in one trip instead of twenty individual carries. Our totes have a rectangular footprint and straight walls, so they stack square on a dolly instead of leaning like a tower of dented boxes. If you're paying movers by the hour, that's real money.
One thing to do before delivery day: clear the path from your packing room to the driveway. A dolly that has to weave around furniture loses most of its advantage.
Why renting beats buying the boxes
Buy 50 cardboard boxes and use 30, and you've paid for 20 you'll flatten and recycle. Buy 30 and need 50, and you're making a hardware store run at 9pm the night before. Renting removes the penalty in both directions — we broke the full cost comparison down here. Cardboard also softens in our coastal humidity, so boxes bought weeks ahead are weaker by move day. Rigid plastic doesn't care.
