August is our busiest moving month in the 805 — and our hottest. A move that feels easy at 8am in Ventura can feel brutal by 2pm in Simi Valley or Moorpark, where inland temps regularly run 15–20 degrees above the coast. Here's how we tell our neighbors to plan around it.
Start earlier than you think
The single biggest thing you can control is your start time. Load the truck between 6am and 11am and you'll do the heavy lifting before the driveway turns into a griddle.
- Coastal (Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme): marine layer usually holds until 10–11am. Use it.
- Inland (Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Santa Paula): heat builds fast after noon. Front-load everything.
- Book your delivery slot the day before your move so packing isn't competing with loading. Our 8–11am window is the most popular for a reason.
Cardboard hates hot garages
Most people pack out of the garage, and a closed Ventura County garage in August can hit 110°F. Cardboard softens, tape adhesive lets go, and the box you packed on Friday splits open on Sunday. Plastic totes don't care — our 27" x 17" x 12" totes hold up to 65 lbs, snap shut, and stack without crushing whatever's underneath.

Heat-specific packing calls
- Candles, crayons, chocolate, vinyl records: these melt or warp. Pack them last and ride with them in the car A/C.
- Electronics: don't leave a sealed tote of laptops baking in a truck bed for hours. Load them last, unload them first.
- Houseplants and pets: car, not truck. Always.
- Toiletries and liquids: pressure builds in the heat. Bag them, cap-side up.
Take care of the humans
Every summer we watch someone push through and regret it. Set a cooler of water by the front door before you load a single tote. Rotate people out of the truck — the box of a moving truck is the hottest place on the property. And plan a real lunch break in the A/C around noon instead of powering through.

Don't rush the unpack
This is where renting totes actually helps in the heat: you're not racing to break down cardboard in a hot garage. Studio and 1-bedroom rentals run 5 days, 2- and 3-bedroom get a full week, and 4-bedroom moves get 10 days. Need longer?
